Ongoing Street Improvement Project
Baltimore City is making a number of roadway improvements at Camden Yards, around the Inner Harbor, and along the Pratt Street corridor. These improvements are part of a larger City project to improve Downtown streets and prepare for the Grand Prix, which will be held next summer. Improvements are taking place on Pratt, Light, Conway, Howard, Lee and Russell Streets.

Annual Wavemaker Awards Program

ULI Baltimore presents its Annual Wavemaker Awards Program Thursday, September 30, 6-9 p.m. at Morgan Stanley Building, at Harbor Point, 901 S. Bond Street. Costs- $100 per person; Young Leaders- $85 per person.


For decades, ULI has recognized outstanding real estate development projects, related programs, and visionaries in urban development through its global “Awards of Excellence” program. This year, ULI Baltimore is honoring six prestigious projects in the Baltimore metropolitan region. Together, we will celebrate and pay special tribute to those individuals who have made projects in our district council a reality as well as celebrating the first ever ULI Baltimore’s Lifetime Achievement award winner and the Rising star winner.

Farmers Market in Hopkins Plaza
The Kaiser Permanente Friday Fresh Farmers' Market continues at Hopkins Plaza this Friday, September 24.

 

Located along the Baltimore Street side of Hopkins Plaza, the Farmers Market will be held every Friday through October, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Retail News

 

Now Open

Agape Driving School, LLC has moved from its former location inside the Equitable Building to a street level location in the same building at 119 E. Fayette Street.

Alewife is now open. This new restaurant, from the owner of well-known Boston area pubs, will breathe life back into the old Lucy’s space at 21 N. Eutaw Street. Featuring 40 taps, a selection of over 100+ bottles, a weekly firkin, wine and cocktails, and a full kitchen of eclectic items, Alewife will be a new dinner and late night destination on the Westside.

 

Dunkin Donuts is now open at 200 E. Lexington Street. The new store will bring Dunkin Donuts famous coffee, donuts, bagels and sandwiches to City Center.

Flowers by Gina D is still peddling flowers, but has moved shop from Brown’s Arcade to a new home just up the street at 330 N. Charles Street.

Funky Buddha is now open at 911 N. Charles Street, below the restaurant Kumari. This tiny Mt. Vernon establishment offers a full bar and limited menu, with daily happy hour specials.

Juror’s Courtyard is now open at 110 St. Paul Street next to the Quality Inn. The new breakfast and lunch venue serves a variety of sandwiches and salads, as well as breakfast food all day.

Tatu is now open at 614 Water Street in Power Plant Live!. This Asian Grill, Sushi Bar, and Saki lounge, featuring Pan Asian, traditional Chinese, and Japanese dishes, is now open Thursday through Saturday for dinner and late night.

Development News

 

City Center 

Vandegrift Forwarding Company, Inc., an import/export company, has expanded its current lease by 520 SF at 1 N. Charles Street.

Baltimore Health Care Access has taken an additional 7,000 SF at 201 E. Baltimore Street.

Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker LLP has expanded at 200 St. Paul Place, taking an additional 3,500 SF.

Year Up, a training and technical skill center for young urban adults, is opening a chapter in Baltimore. The nonprofit group has leased 3,200 SF at 201 N. Charles Street.
 

Mount Vernon

The new John and Frances Angelos Law Center celebrated its groundbreaking at the end of August. This 190,000 square foot addition to the University of Baltimore Law School will make it the sixth largest public law school in the country. The building, which includes many environmentally friendly components, is expected to be completed in 2012. The Abell Foundation helped pay for the international design contest for the project.
 

Adjacent Neighborhoods
Managed Care Services, LLC, a health care management company, has signed a lease for 13,229 SF at 312 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

Construction of the roads and sidewalks for the Westport Waterfront development is scheduled to begin in November or December. Turner Development Group plans to begin the first wave of building construction nine months after the completion of the roads with the first buildings coming online in 2012.

The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development's interactive business website, www.choosemaryland.org, has won a 2010 Digital Government Achievement Award from the Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute.

RTKL Associates, Inc. recently received the Grand Prize at Retail Traffic’s 21st Annual Superior Achievement in Design & Imaging Awards for its Dolce Vito Tejo project in Lisbon, Portugal. RTKL also received an award at this event for a shopping center renovation in Melbourne, Australia.

Events

Harborplace & The Gallery, M&T Bank, and 98 Rock will host a Ravens pep rally Thursday, September 23, noon-2 p.m. at the Harborplace Amphitheater. Crowd favorite and team mascot, Poe the Raven, will be joined by Ravens cheerleaders and the M&T Bank mascot, Swipe, to get everyone pumped. Downtown fans are invited to rally and rouse Ravens spirit, just in time for the first home game on Sunday, September 26, against the Cleveland Browns. Harborplace merchants; Noodles & Co, Phillips Seafood Restaurant, M&S Grill and Stadium Sports will join in the festivities by providing refreshments and coupons. This weekend, head to Mount Vernon for the Baltimore Book Festival, September 24-26. On Monday, September 27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mount Vernon Park will be the site for a celebration of the Designation of Charles Street as a National Scenic Byway. City, County and State Officials will be among the attendees at this special event. Representatives from important landmarks along this twelve mile stretch will be on hand. Transportation

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has introduced CharmCard, a “smart” credit card-sized, electronic, reusable fare card that’s good for travel on Baltimore’s Metro Subway, Local Bus and Light Rail systems, as well as on bus and Metrorail services in Washington, DC, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and Northern Virginia. CharmCard offers a convenient, easy and secure way to pay your fare, check your card balance and add cash value or a pass product. You can even register it to eliminate concerns about a lost, damaged or stolen card. It’s available wherever MTA passes are sold, and at select Giant and CVS stores throughout the Baltimore area.
