The Virgin Mary and Other Migrant Mothers
The Emmy-nominated singer/songwriter Ellen Cherry uses history
for inspiration Sunday, May 8, 1–2 p.m. She will include
many selections from her women’s history album, Years, and draw
from her extensive repertoire. Cherry will highlight both the
Virgin Mary and Dorothea Lange’s iconic photograph “Migrant
Mother” through her songs “Maryanne” and “1933: To California.”
The Mother Prayed, the Daughter Felt Relief: Women, Motherhood &
Pilgrimage in Late Medieval Europe follows, 2–3 p.m.
Medieval stories recount that women frequently sought healing
for their injured or ailing children, thereby gaining social and
cultural power from their brushes with the miraculous. Author
Leigh Ann Craig will show how women’s roles as mothers could
justify these pilgrimage travels.

AVAM's Lucky 13th Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race
AVAM's annual
Kinetic Sculpture Race is May 7 2011! A race of
wacky, imaginative, totally human-powered works of art
designed to travel on land, through mud, and over deep
Harbor waters constructed out of used bicycles, gears, and
parts, created by a lunatic genius who tinkers around in the
garage or backyard. Pilots (Kinetinauts) compete for the
most coveted Mediocre Award (finishes right in the middle)
and the highly prized Next-to-the-Last Award (finishes,
well, next to last) and serious prizes including Art and
Engineering.
Race starts at
10 a.m. at the American Visionary Art Museum (get there
early to take part in Opening Ceremony, including the
Blessing of De Feet!). Other great spots to see the vehicles
are the first Checkpoint, atop Federal Hill; the Water Entry
at the Korean War Memorial Park in Canton; the uphill
mud-pit in Patterson Park; the not-so-quick-sand pit in
Patterson Park; and, of course, anywhere along the 15-mile
route through Baltimore. For more information – including

Civil War 150th
Anniversary: The War Came By Train
Open April 15, 2011-May 30, 2015 at the B&O Railroad
Museum. The American Civil War was the first major conflict
where railroads played a prominent role and the B&O was the
major line that straddled a divided country. Between April
19, 1861 (The Baltimore Riot of 1861) and April 21, 1865
(Lincoln's funeral train leaving Baltimore for Illinois),
the B&O stood witness and participant in the greatest
conflict the U.S. has ever faced and changed the course of
American history.
The War Came By
Train serves as the B&O Railroad Museum's primary attraction
for the five year commemoration of the War's
sesquicentennial. The National Landmark Roundhouse will
exhibit the largest assemblage of Civil War railroad
equipment in the world featuring locomotives and rail cars
that served during the war, significant military and
personal artifacts that will change annually to portray each
year of the war (some artifacts never before on public
display), and a narrated train ride to the original site of
Camp Carroll, the largest Union encampment in Baltimore.
