Retail News
Now Open
A+ Car Rental is now open at 817 Guilford Avenue in
Mount Vernon.
Baltimore Barber Lounge is
open for business at 813 N. Charles Street in Mount Vernon. The
shop caters to boys and men and offers quality haircuts at an
affordable price.
Calvert Deli and Cafe is open at 353 N. Calvert Street.
The deli is open on weekdays for breakfast and lunch and serves
a variety of dishes including Mexican, Korean, and soul food.
FreshFit Restaurant has
opened inside the Merritt Athletic Club at 201 Centre Street in
Mount Vernon. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch and
offers an array of healthy meal options, such as omelets, soups,
salads, and wraps.
Market Centre Design is now open at 339 N. Charles
Street. The space houses the design studio RC Interiors LLC and
also offers home furnishings in a wide variety of styles as well
as original pieces of art done by local artists.
The Shop at Bromo, located
in the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower at 21 S. Eutaw Street, has
recently opened for business. This new store gives local
artisans the opportunity to sell their wares and aims to make
art more accessible to City residents. Items for sale include
paintings, jewelry, ceramics, and needlework.
Coming Soon
Beef Brothers will open
on January 3 in the EATS Charles Plaza Food Court at 222 N.
Charles Street, bringing deli sandwiches, soft pretzels, and
other favorites to the area. The new location is an
expansion of their existing business, which includes a
seasonal restaurant on wheels that has already become
popular with Hopkins Plaza employees.
Chipotle Mexican Grill
is coming to The Can Company building in Canton. The casual
restaurant offers burritos, tacos, and other Mexican fare
and is scheduled to open in the spring.
Delia Foley’s Pub is opening in January at 1439 S.
Charles Street in South Baltimore. The new bar will be an
Irish pub with eight taps and a bottled beer list, and will
also eventually serve food.
Francesca’s Collections,
a women’s boutique, will open this spring on the first floor
of The Gallery in the Inner Harbor. The retailer specializes
in fashion-forward styles and will sell clothing,
accessories, and gifts in the new location.
Learning to Blossom, a 24-hour daycare facility, will
be opening at 834 Guilford Avenue. The center is currently
accepting enrollment for children aged six weeks to five
years.
Lenny’s Delicatessen is
scheduled to open this spring in the Pratt Street Pavilion
at Harborplace. The deli will offer breakfast all day as
well as corned beef, sandwiches, wraps and salads for dining
in and carry out. The Inner Harbor space is the third
location in the Baltimore area.
Nalley Fresh is coming to the lobby of the SunTrust
building at 120 E. Baltimore Street. The restaurant, which
focuses on fresh and homemade food, will serve salads,
wraps, burritos, and frozen tart yogurt.
Poptronics Electronics & House of Foam, a car audio
and electronics retailer and foam rubber supplier, will be
opening at 1004 Russell Street across from M&T Bank Stadium
in early 2011.
Sweet - a Bakery and Cafe
is closing its previous location in Ellicott City and will
reopen a new location at 237 W. Read Street in Mount Vernon.
The bakery is scheduled to open in early January and will
offer pastries, café items, coffee, and custom cake
decorating services.

Development News
Baltimore Green
Space is currently pioneering a program to create a
comprehensive map of vacant lots that have been turned into
community green spaces. Volunteers with the group are sent
out in teams to take geo-coded photos of gardens, pocket
parks, and other open spaces in the area using smart phones.
The data that they collect will be added to the existing
information in the community use section of City databases.
Governor Martin O’Malley and the Maryland Energy
Administration have awarded five Baltimore organizations
money under the “EmPOWER Clean Energy Communities” program,
which aims to help local governments and non-profits fund
energy efficiency initiatives in low-to-moderate income
areas. The awardees will carry out projects such as energy
audits and retrofits at residential buildings across the
City.
City Center
Best
Western Envy Hotel has opened at 22 E. Fayette Street.
The hotel caters to both business and
leisure travelers.
Federal Capital Partners has purchased The Munsey Building,
an 18-story high-rise apartment building at 7 N. Calvert
Street, for $13.75 million. The sale was brokered by
CB Richard Ellis. The
building, which contains 146 apartments and 4,000 square feet of
ground floor retail space, will undergo moderate improvements to
common areas and amenity space.
Marsh
USA, Inc., an insurance and risk advisement firm,
has signed a lease for 1,803 square feet at 1 South Street.
CB Richard Ellis brokered
the deal.
Sleep Inn and Suites Downtown Inner Harbor is now open at 301
Fallsway. The hotel offers 62 guest rooms with on-site
parking, and caters to both business and leisure travelers.
Inner Harbor
The
Baltimore Board of Estimates has approved a lease that will
allow for the development of Pierce’s Park on Pier 5
in the Inner Harbor. The $1 lease for the one-acre parcel of
land will last 25 years, with an option to extend. The park,
which is scheduled to open in the fall, is a collaborative
effort between the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore and the
Downtown
Baltimore Family Alliance.
The Baltimore City Urban Design and Architecture Review Panel
has given final authorization for a new Education and Heritage
Center at the
USS Constellation, a ship
museum in the Inner Harbor. The new space will contain
interactive exhibits about life aboard the ship and its role in
fighting the African slave trade. The proposed design costs $4.2
million and is slated to be finished during 2012.
Three steel beams from the North Tower of the New York World
Trade Center will be included at the Baltimore World Trade
Center as the focus of the Maryland 9/11 Memorial
construction. The beams arrived in the City in November and are
being stored in the Marine Terminal until they are installed at
the new site.
Westside
The
Baltimore Development Corporation
has entered into an Exclusive Negotiating Privilege (ENP) with
Carmel Realty Associates for the redevelopment of five vacant
properties in the 100 block of West Lexington Street.
Carmel Realty, who is already an existing property owner in the
area, plans a mixed-use development with ground floor retail
space and apartments above.
Adjacent Neighborhoods
The
Baltimore City Council granted its approval for plans to build
the 11-acre 25th Street Station development at the former
Anderson Automotive site in Remington. The development
will include apartments and retail such as a Wal-Mart and a
Lowe’s store. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2011
and could last up to a year and a half.
Legg Mason Capital Management, a part of
Legg
Mason, Inc., has chosen Baltimore Technology
Park at 1401 Russell Street as its primary data
center.
The Baltimore City Zoning Board has approved plans for the
development of an industrial site in the 400 block of S.
Central Avenue in Little Italy. The development team Hotelco
LLC, which consists of Samuel Polakoff of
Cormony Development and Josh Neiman of Hybrid
Development Group, plans to consolidate six properties into a
seven-story boutique hotel.

Events
The Shrine of St. Alphonsus Church invites the
public to celebrate St. John Neumann at two events during the
coming month. The Feast of St. John Neumann Mass with Veneration
of Relic will take place on January 5 at 12:10 p.m., and a
lecture titled “Missionary Spirit of St. John Neumann” followed
by Mass in the Tridentine Latin Rite will take place on January
8 at 3 p.m. Both masses take place at 114 W. Saratoga Street.

Non-Profits
The
World Trade Center Institute has a way for you to
give back through hosting a foreign professional from Ukraine
and becoming an ambassador of your community. A USAID sponsored
program will bring 10 food safety specialists from Kiev from Feb
23 until March 16 to learn about best practices in food
safety, food-borne diseases prevention and information
dissemination approaches. Volunteer opportunities are available
in the areas of homestays, dinner hospitality hosts, volunteer
drivers and cultural activities volunteer interpreters. If
