Snowpocalypse 2010

As tough as it is to shovel snow from in front of your house – or clear your parking space – imagine trying to shovel every corner in Downtown.  That’s what the Clean Sweep Ambassadors have been hard at work on in the aftermath of two record-breaking blizzards in less than a week.  To date, our crews have dedicated more than 145 hours, shoveling corner ramps and crosswalks.

The Partnership has also been actively involved in the City’s response to the storm, and we had executive staff in the Emergency Command Center as the bad weather began to hit.  Throughout the past two storms, we released a series of email and web updates keeping you up-to-date on traffic conditions, Snow Emergency Plan instructions, and other important information.

Courtesy Escorts
Downtown Baltimore Guides are always ready to bring peace of mind to anyone who needs help navigating slick sidewalks or who is working late and reluctant to walk to their car or transit stop alone. Courtesy Escorts are available within the Downtown Management Authority (DMA) district, the 106-block area that comprises the core of Downtown, from 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. seven days a week.

Anyone wishing to receive an escort should call 410.244.8778 during business hours or 410.802.9631 after hours.

Snow and Ice Removal
We're halfway through the snowiest winter in this state's history! Just a friendly reminder that the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks is the responsibility of individual property owners.

Help us keep Downtown workers, residents, and visitors safe and keep the sidewalks in front of your business clear this winter.

Keeping Downtown Beautiful

Downtown Partnership has hired a tree steward who will work to keep Downtown's newly-planted trees healthy through the first year. This new position is part of the Initiative for a Cleaner, Greener Baltimore through a grant from the Baltimore Community Foundation.

A Baltimore City Parks and People survey of all Downtown trees and tree pits revealed 106 existing empty tree pits to be planted and maintained Downtown. Many of the locations identified in that survey have been planted year after year only to die due to lack of additional staff support to simply deliver a regular schedule of water during the first year of vital root attachment.

The new tree steward will receive training from the Department of Forestry on proper planting, cultivation and maintenance of street trees and deliver, under the direction of Downtown Partnership’s Director of Parks and Plazas, vital first year water, weeding, feeding, mulch and pruning.

Welcome to Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
As the former City Council President, Baltimore’s new mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake certainly needs no introduction. Nor does she need a crash course on important agenda items for Downtown Baltimore. The Mayor has long worked with The Partnership on issues that are important to Downtown residents and businesses.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake has said that her priorities include creating a more vibrant and walkable Downtown, strengthening Downtown’s Westside, and replacing the aging First Mariner Arena. These are priorities we all share.

To assist with her transition, the Mayor named Downtown Partnership president, Kirby Fowler, to the committee reviewing essential services such as public safety, transportation, and public works. We work closely with each of these functions on a daily basis and look forward to helping the Mayor improve service delivery within Downtown Baltimore.
